ScoutQuest

Scouts on a quest for action, adventure, and treasure scoured the nation's capital July 24-25, 2010 during ScoutQuest! They were able to uncover clues that unlocked the link between Scouting and some of our greatest national treasures in an interactive citywide hunt, held in partnership with some of the greatest museums in the world. Learn more about it!

Using QR Codes

It's as easy as taking a picture! When you snap a photo of a Quick Response (QR) code with a smartphone, it reveals a hidden message. Several free applications are available that can read the codes like i-nigma, BeeTagg, or the Zxing Reader. During ScoutQuest, guides equipped with HTC Aria smartphones were on hand so everyone could play the game.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History dedicates its collections and scholarship to inspiring a broader understanding of our nation and its many peoples. We create opportunities for learning and present challenging ideas about our country's past. The collections, exhibitions and programs reflect the values of scouting: citizenship, patriotism, leadership, volunteerism and environmental stewardship.

The Museum preserves more than 3 million artifacts—all true national treasures. We take care of everything from Abraham Lincoln's top hat to Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet and Dorothy's ruby slippers. Our collections form a fascinating mosaic of American life and comprise the greatest single collection of American history.

The centerpiece of the Museum is the Star-Spangled Banner, the almost 200-year-old flag that inspired Francis Scott Key in 1814 to pen the lyrics that would become the national anthem in 1931. The gallery presents the fragile 30-foot by 34-foot flag inside an environmentally controlled chamber. Low light levels protect the flag, yet dramatically evoke "dawn's early light." An interactive touch table invites you to investigate details about the flag. Visitors learn stories about the making of the banner, the preservation efforts and how Americans have used the flag and the song to express diverse ideas of patriotism and national identity. Visit the online exhibition.
